Whether you are doing a sugar detox or just trying to cut back, sugar addiction is hard to beat! As a former sugar eating pastry chef-turned- health focused herbalist, I’ve personally been through a sugar detox and can relate to the sugar withdrawal cravings and symptoms that you might be struggling with right now. Luckily, I have found some amazing herbs that can help stop your sugar cravings naturally and help you transition to a new, healthier way of eating.

Here are some of my favorite herbal remedies that can help you deal with your sugar withdrawal symptoms, as well as give you lots of other health benefits too. Best of all, most of these herbs are probably already in your kitchen pantry.

Combat Cravings With CINNAMON – Warming to both the physical body and the emotional self, cinnamon is helpful as you cut out sugar in several ways. Cinnamon can help lower blood sugar levels, which helps to minimize those insulin spikes that can lead to cravings and overeating. Plus cinnamon is delicious and adds a natural earthy sweetness to foods, helping to trick and satisfy our taste buds.

Fight Sugar Withdrawal Headaches with ROSEMARY – One of the tastiest culinary herbs, rosemary is also an effective natural remedy for headaches. Rosemary helps circulate blood flow, especially to the head, making it a helpful ally in combating those sugar withdrawal headaches.

Improve Digestion With THYME –Thyme is more than just a fragrant and tasty herb to cook with! Thyme can help with digestion which comes in handy during a detox as we are making dietary changes and transition to a new way of eating. Thyme has a unique way of warming and relaxing the body to help stimulate effective digestive function and even may help to relieve gas and cramping.

Destress and Feel Calmer with SAGE – Sage has been used for centuries because it contains powerful antioxidants that can help lower blood sugar levels and keep our cholesterol in check. But what I love about sage during a detox is that it is a potent nervine-this means it provides support to our nervous system, and can help our bodies go from “fight or flight” stress mode to “rest and digest.” So sage can help us relax and feel calmer, making us feel stronger and more confident as we go through the detox.

Naturally Detox Your Liver With TURMERIC – Turmeric is often known as the detox herb, because it helps to support the liver, which is our bodies natural detoxifier. By adding turmeric into our diet, we are helping to eliminate some environmental and dietary toxins. Plus, turmeric can also help to regulate blood sugar levels and may help lower cholesterol while reducing inflammation that can lead to chronic disease.

Satisfy Your Sweet Cravings with TULSI – Also known as holy basil, Tulsi is an adaptogenic herb that is considered a sacred plant in some Indian cultures. It which can help promote mental balance and help our bodies manage stress more effectively. -including the stress we might feel from giving up sugar!Tulsi helps to lower blood sugar levels, and it has a naturally sweet flavor that can help ease the transition from sugary foods.

Add Nutrients with NETTLE – Known as stinging nettle, this fierce plant helps us by providing a ton of nutrition. Cravings are a result of our body asking for nutrients! And nettle is so packed with minerals, that it helps ease cravings, because it’s filling your body up with the nutrients it needs.

EASY WAYS TO USE HERBS

Adding herbs into your daily routine is actually quite easy. Here are two things you can do today to help stop sugar cravings naturally and get healthier. Pick one way to start incorporating more herbs today, and work your way up from there- you’ve got this!

Make herbal tea: Most of these herbs make a great tea! Either purchase them in pre-made tea bags at your nearby grocery store or just steep 1-2 tablespoons in hot water or at least 10-15 minutes. Giving the herbs enough time to steep helps to fully infuse their goodness into your mug. Drink as many cups as you’d like- perhaps whenever a sugar craving hits – you really can’t overdo with these!

Add spices to your cooking: Start incorporating rosemary, thyme, and sage into your cooking. These herbs can be used together beautifully, or you can use them individually. They taste great when added into eggs, roasted meats and vegetables, stir fries, and soups.

Turmeric can be added to your cooking too – it’s a traditional ingredient in many curries, and I love using Superfood Turmeric to make golden milk. Turmeric is best absorbed with fat, so make sure to stir in some coconut milk or cream.

You can add cinnamon to almost anything- it’s actually quite good on pork combined with other spices. Or try one of my favorites-add a teaspoon of cinnamon into your coffee grounds while brewing. Once it’s brewed, blend it up with some coconut milk and collagen for a frothy, tasty latte that won’t give you the sugar crash that a coffee-shop latte will!
